politics went on in 3rd grade "social" studies class in
Oct/Nov 2008? I love my
kids! While you are

I call it "roll out the vote".
The
background, when we sit down at supper, each kid usually tells me
about their day up till supper time. My 3rd grader told me her
teacher told her she was going to be a Republican, to which my kid
replied "No, I am going to be an Independent like my Mommy".
Note: Calling someone a Republican in an almost all
black school (my kid is white) is not considered friendly, even if
most of the parents are wealthy.
So, I asked her to get me
the sheet they used in class, which took a couple of days. She had
to sneak it home, because they were told they could not bring them
home!
Here is
the "get out the vote" home work lesson given to my 3rd
grader by her teacher at Avondale Elementary School in Avondale
Estates GA.

ARE YOU A DEMOCRAT OR
A REPUBLICAN?
This "test" is simple. In the
middle, there is an issue that both parties must deal with. On the
left, is one opinion about the issue. On the right is another
opinion about the issue. Check the side that you agree with. At the
end, you will find out your party!
See, it's simple!
WAR
LC: War should only be fought as a last resort after
both countries have tried to settle any problems peacefully.
Citizens should have the choice of whether or not to fight in a war.
RC: War can be used as a way to settle disagreements between
our country and another. Citizens should be required to fight in a
war that protects our country.
THE POOR
LC:
Sometimes, people go through hard times. This is part of life. The
government should provide money and support to help poor people "get
back on their feet".
RC: People may go through hard
times, but, hard work can help them get out of hard times. The
government shouldn't provide money, but, make sure that there are
plenty of jobs available.
RACE
LC:
Differences between kinds of people aren't that important. In the
end, everyone wants the same things for themselves and their
families.
RC: Differences between people should be
recognized. Different people sometimes want, and need, different
things for their lives and their families.
EDUCATION
LC:Education is a process in which children are taught
skills that are important for their personal growth. Education and
educators should be encouraged to respond to the needs of students.
RC: Education is a process in which children are taught how
to be responsible and productive citizens in the United States.
Education and educators should be carefully monitored.
PEOPLE
LC: All people have the ability to be "good"
and the good in every person should be encouraged and trusted.
RC:
Each person has the ability to make serious mistakes. People should
be monitored, and punished for doing wrong.
OTHER
COUNTRIES
LC: America should interact and share with
other countries. Our interactions should be peaceful, and we must
take care of hurting people around the world.
RC: America
should interact with other countries that can strengthen America.
Our interactions should protect the strength of our country,. We
should take care of Americans before taking care of people in other
countries.
TAXES (money added to purchases; money
taken out of paychecks)
LC: It is "ok" if taxes
are high because the national government uses them to pay for roads,
text books, and other things citizens need.
RC: Taxes should
not be used to pay for things citizens need. If citizens are able to
keep more of their own money, they can use their own money when they
choose to purchase needed items.
PUNISHMENT
LC:Punishment is not the best way to teach someone the
right way
RC: Punishment is necessary and should be harsh
enough to teach a lesson.
LOCAL GOVERNMENT
(county and state government)
LC:The local government should
follow the directions of the national government.
RC: The
local government knows what to do on its own, without having to be
constantly told by the national government.
NATIONAL
GOVERNMENT (located in Washington DC)
LC: The national
government knows what is best for all citizens because it has the
ability to know what is going on in all parts of the country.
RC:
The national government should be treated as a way to organize
information from all the different local governments.
IMMIGRANTS
(people from other countries who want to live in the US)
LC:People
from other countries strengthen America and add to the diversity of
the country.
RC: People from other countries change America
because they don't know how America operates.
THE
ENVIRONMENT
LC: The environment must be protected from
businesses and people who want to damage it or use too many
resources.
RC: The environment should be use to help
businesses make more money, if necessary. There are plenty of
resources.
