GEORGIA RESEARCH FOUNDATION, INC. This award is
funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009
(Public Law 111-5). At the culmination of the lithospheric accretion
that built the Appalachian Mountains (250-320 million years ago) the
lithosphere of another continent (Gondwana) collided with
proto-North America. The suture between these two lithospheres is
delineated in the crust beneath southern Georgia by variations in
fossils, rock types and ages, and a zone of southward dipping
reflectors imaged by seismic reflection data. However, the location
and geometry of the suture in the mantle is unknown. The goal of
this project is to determine the position and shape of the
lithospheric suture in the mantle, and to measure any contrasts in
crust and mantle physical and chemical properties across the suture.
85 EarthScope USArray Flexible Array broadband stations are being
deployed in two N-S linear arrays that straddle the suture. One line
stretches from North Carolina to the coast of the Florida panhandle.
The other extends from South Carolina into central Florida. These
stations, together with the stations of the EarthScope USArray
Transportable Array, will record seismic waves from around the
globe. These data will be analyzed to measure three-dimensional
variations in isotropic and anisotropic wave velocities, and the
velocity models will be interpreted in terms of temperature, rock
composition (including volatile content), and rock deformation
fabrics. This research will address a series of fundamental
questions. How does the crustal suture connect to mantle structures?
Did mantle accretion occur on shallow dipping shear zones, or did it
occur at least in part on more vertical contacts that imply
horizontal shortening over a broad depth range? If dipping mantle
interfaces exist, do they represent relict subducted lithosphere, or
are they shear zones unrelated to prior subduction? What does
anisotropy in seismic velocities imply about the distribution of
deformation during accretion? What was the direction of subduction
associated with the collision of Gondwana and Laurentia? Continental
break-up followed the lithospheric collision, leading to the opening
of the Atlantic Ocean. How was the continental lithosphere affected
by this episode of extension, rifting and magmatism? Is there
evidence for delamination of the lithosphere? What are the
present-day patterns of flow in the weak mantle asthenosphere that
underlies the lithosphere? This project is directly supporting the
education and training of graduate and undergraduate students. We
are developing educational materials that use this research project
to build understanding of concepts such as continental collision,
mountain building, and continental break-up. Experiment results will
be used in our undergraduate and graduate classes, and in outreach
to schools in the vicinity of our home institutions in Georgia,
North Carolina, and Rhode Island. Award Number

COLLEGE, PRESIDENT & FELLOWS OF Title: MRI:
Development of a New Instrument to Observe Isotopic Fluxes of CH4
and CO2 from Arctic Melt Regions, to Link Carbon Fluxes, Climate
Feedbacks and Sea Level Rise. New developments in the physical
sciences are poised to make critically important contributions to
pressing needs of society—particularly in the arena linking
global energy options with constraints imposed by irreversible
changes to Earth’s climate. The irreversible nature of carbon
release from melt zones in the Arctic constitutes one of the most
formidable feedbacks in the climate system. While global industry
adds some 8 gigatons (Gt) of carbon from fossil fuel combustion to
the atmosphere each year, these northern hemisphere (NH) permafrost
structures contain upwards of 1000 Gt of available methane (CH4) and
carbon dioxide (CO2). Clearly, the release of just a very small
fraction of the permafrost reservoir or the even more immense
oceanic reservoir would constitute a powerful climate forcing, the
magnitude of which could systematically exceed the amount of carbon
released to date by the burning of fossil fuels. The primary
objective of this research is to construct a new generation of
instrumentation capable of establishing simultaneous measurement of
the primary isotopes of methane and carbon dioxide emitted from the
carbon reservoirs in the high latitude permafrost regions of the NH
as these systems melt with the advance of increasing temperatures.
The determination of the flux of these carbon isotopes from the
carbon reservoirs of the soil, permafrost, and clathrate structures
of the Arctic is a critically important set of observations that is
needed for the prediction of both the rate and irreversibility of
the climate forcing resulting from the flow of heat into these
systems. This instrumentation program reflects highly
interdisciplinary nature of climate research at Harvard that
directly links faculty, postdoctoral scientists, professional staff,
graduate and undergraduate students across the Departments of Earth
and Planetary Sciences (EPS), Chemistry and Chemical Biology (CCB),
and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), and
engages the Harvard University Center for the Environment (HUCE).
These new observations will involve highly collaborative activities
with colleagues studying the fusion of in situ data with regional
models, with colleagues studying the biogeochemistry of carbon
dioxide and methane release from reservoirs at mid and high
latitudes, with colleagues studying the paleorecord, with colleagues
involved in developing computer modeling strategies for climate
forecasting, and with the large community of undergraduates and
graduate students at Harvard and at other universities across the
country. Student-level engagement from concept to completion is
crucial, not only to the successful construction and deployment of
the proposed carbon isotope instrument, but to the broader
scientific future of this Nation, which will come to rely even more
on scientists whose training and philosophy is centered on the
physical sciences in the service of key societal objectives. Because
of the scale of the carbon flux problem, the design of the
instrument will be made freely available to the broader climate
research community. AWARD OVERVIEW Award Number

Activities/Project Description This grant was awarded in early
August with a start date of 8/1/09. During this short period
preliminary work was begun in the laboratory with construction of a
breadboard methane measurement instrument. The preliminary data is
very encouraging. In parallel, discussions have begun with the two
vendors capable of producing quantum cascade lasers having the
appropriate characteristics as light sources for the detection and
measurement of both methane and carbon dioxide and their isotopes.
An effort to miniaturize the onboard data system required by this
program was also started. Jobs Created

Jobs Created Mechanical Engineer, Senior Electrical Engineer,
Electrical Engineer, Software Engineer, Senior Electrical
Technician, Post Doctoral Fellow, Research Assistant. This research
brings together scientists and engineers in a very unique way to
develop and support the cutting edge instrumentation needed to
address the most critical problems in climate science. As with other
instruments built in the Anderson group, this project will merge a
scientific team consisting of an undergraduate student, a graduate
student, and two postdoctoral research associates with a staff of
computer, mechanical, and electrical engineers in order to produce
the fully integrated carbon flux instrument. Students and
postdoctoral researchers will be involved in the initial development
of the laboratory instrument prototype as well as the design of the
field instrument. While our engineering staff builds the circuit
boards, students are involved in the testing, refining, and
integration of the electronics with the hardware system. They also
are involved with the testing of the hardware and software
components and integrating them with the opto-mechanical design.
This is important, as it will be the postdoctoral scientists and
especially the graduate students who will be responsible for the
deployment and operation of the instrument. As this instrument will
be collecting data over many years, ensuring the training of
graduate students is paramount for ensuring the traceability of the
dataset. These same graduate students will also be responsible for
analyzing the raw data and using the derived fluxes to better
understand the role of arctic carbon release in the global climate
system. Additionally, they will archive the data for other
researchers to use thereby allowing the dataset from this instrument
to be integrated with other datasets from other universities and
research institutions. Award

award is funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of
2009 (Public Law 111-5)."This proposal will address the
provenance of computational processes and the data they manipulate.
These are of fundamental importance in maintaining scientific
process. Provenance (also referred to as audit trail, lineage, and
pedigree) captures information about the steps used to generate a
given data product. Such information provides documentation that is
key to preserving the data and determining the data's quality and
authorship as well as interpreting, reproducing, sharing and
publishing results. It also seeks to produce algorithms and
techniques for extracting and reusing useful knowledge embedded in
workflow specifications. Workflows and workflow-based systems have
proven to be successful in capturing computational tasks at various
levels of detail and automatically record provenance information.
They have recently emerged as an alternative to ad-hoc approaches to
assembling computational tasks that are widely used in the
scientific community. In order to effectively use provenance
information and to deal with a potential information overload, we
need novel tools and techniques that help users. The ability to
explore the knowledge available in the provenance of computational
tasks has the potential to foster large-scale collaborations,
expedite scientific training in disciplinary and inter-disciplinary
settings, as well as to reduce the lag time between data acquisition
and scientific insight. Award Number

PLANETARIUM, THE This award is
funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009
(Public Law 111-5). The Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope
Array System (VERITAS), located at the Fred Lawrence Whipple
Observatory basecamp of Mt. Hopkins, AZ, became fully operational in
the Spring of 2007. VERITAS probes the extreme physics of sources
such as the jets of Active Galactic Nuclei, Supernovae Remnants and
microquasars. The discovery of three new blazars and the detection
of several other sources during the 2007-2008 season proves the
potential of the VERITAS array. In the following years, VERITAS is
expected to further expand the catalog of Very High Energy (VHE)
gamma-ray sources in the Northern Hemisphere and also to contribute
significantly in multiwavelength (from radio through optical, UV and
X-rays to VHE gamma rays) observing campaigns. It will also be a
very important complement to the Fermi Large Area Telescope launched
by NASA in June 2008. This award will provide the Adler Planetarium
base support for the staff's VERITAS science and service efforts
over the next three years. The Adler group's service efforts are
focused on further development and maintenance of the VERITAS
optical pointing monitor and related systems in order to improve the
effective resolution and sensitivity of the VERITAS telescopes. The
analysis efforts will be in studies of Active Galactic Nuclei and
Starburst Galaxies. The group will continue to support
multiwavelength and multi-messenger (neutrino) studies complementing
the TeV data obtained with VERITAS. For the broader impacts of the
program, the PI is the project leader for the VERITAS Education and
Public Outreach (EPO) program. The Adler group will be involved in
creating content for a general audience website, as well as
materials for on site demonstrations and exhibit kiosks. The Adler
Planetarium's Space Visualization Laboratory (SVL) coordinates
production of the VERITAS interactives, but most of the work is
contributed by students or post doctorals from individual VERITAS
groups. Through these efforts, the VERITAS post-doctoral associates
will have the opportunity to learn best-practices in EPO techniques. AWARD OVERVIEW Award Number

that we do not know about, that was mentioned on the Sci-Fi channel. Or maybe
you can ask your congressman if this was a buy-the-vote program for
college students for Obama, or job creation for you, while you lose
your home or languish on unemployment. Ask! Link:

UTAH, THE This award is
funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009
(Public Law 111-5). It will provide continued support to perform
operations and to analyze data from the VERITAS Observatory. It will
also support the group's role in the ongoing maintenance and
upgrades of the VERITAS telescopes located at the F.L. Whipple
Observatory in Amado, AZ. The Observatory uses an array of four
12-meter diameter Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs)
to record faint flashes of Cherenkov light generated by Very High
Energy (VHE) gamma-rays interacting with the Earth's atmosphere.
These gamma-rays provide a direct probe of relativistic, non-thermal
process in jets associated with Active Galactic Nuclei. The group
will use VERITAS observations to probe astrophysical phenomena such
as starburst galaxies, low surface brightness companions to the
Milky Way/Andromeda, and diffuse emission from the Galactic plane, a
tracer of cosmic ray origin in our Galaxy. They will also pursue
multi-wavelength observations and analysis of VERITAS data in
conjunction with other surveys. The broader impacts of the program
will include Education and Public Outreach programs. The group has
been the driving force behind the creation of the state of Utah's
first graduate Astronomy degree program and has created a
regional/national consortium to develop and operate a new high
altitude optical/IR observatory in Southern Utah. Award Number
