StimUwaste

A noun invented by me, John Brown. It means money BORROWED (from China) and then spent on things that did nothing to CREATE jobs for Americans, or spent on frivolous things and pork marks.

Another name for Democrats, how about Spend-O-Crats?

This list is so you have many good reasons to fire everyone

from both/all parties that voted for the StimUwaste pork package.

$500,000 to Micheal Mann.

He is the author of the FIOA - Climate Gate e-mails. You know the people that destroyed 150 years of original tree data, after they "massaged" it, that can never be recovered, that developed programs to "massage" data when the results were not to their liking, that flat out lied, and then made sure dissenting voices were shut out. Those so called "scientists". He got $500,000 of StimUwaste money. How many jobs did that create?

I never owned a gun and had no desire to own a gun, until Obama and Hillary were running. Then I joined the NRA. Sometime later I bought my 1st gun from Adventure Outdoors in Marietta because I had read about the mayor of NYC harassing them with a lawsuit. I fully support what the NRA supports.

BUT THIS HAS TO BE THE WORSE BECAUSE IT HURTS.

I really expected more from the NRA then to apply for Stimulus funds.

Freaking Ridiculous!

What? Gun and ammo sales have gone through the roof and you need stimulus funds to save your jobs? You can't even buy .380 in some places and 12 gauge 3" shells are now $1 a piece. Obama has been a real stimulus for anything gun related, which is the funny part because it is the only stimulus that has worked and without government funds.

The NRA has to have one of the biggest lobbies in America. I bet you have people on the payroll or as a lobby that earn more then my house is worth. Did you really have to apply for stimulus funds?

I hope I get an answer from the NRA that says it was a stupid short sighted mistake.

$40,000 for the NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA

Translation: They want to clear out the brush to kill more animals

The award funding provided by the Service and the Cooperator will provide forest stand improvement on approx. 600 acres of pinyon-juniper habitat. This thinning will permit understory deciduous shrubs to grow and serve as forage, cover and nesting habitat for resident wildlife species and migratory birds. Federally threatened or endangered species that may occur on the property are the southwestern willow flycatcher (endangered)(migratory habitat) and the Mexican Spotted Owl (Threatened). Other species of concern to the Service that may occur on the property are swift fox, American peregrine falcon, Baird's sparrow, mountain plover, northern goshawk, Rio Grande cutthrouat trout and dwarf milkweed (an herbaceous plant). This property is located between the Shortgrass Prairie Bird Concervation Region (BCR) and the Southern Rockies/Colorado Plateau BCR. These habitats support diverse, although declining, bird species (e.g., ferruginous hawk, Lewis's woodpecker, Graces' warbler, Bendire's thrasher, pinyon jay, gray vireo, and Williamson's sapsucker) as well as, resident speicies such as Black Bear, Mule Deer, Pronghorn, Elk, Coyote, Turkey, Scaled Quail and a variety of reptiles and insects. Removal and/or thinning of the dense pinyon pin-juniper stands should allow more precipitation to reach groundwater and augment soil moisuture in riparian areas on the property. Additional groundwater will increase the duration of wetted portions of the creek thus imporving riparian vegetation used by migrating southwestern willow flycatchers and increase stream flow to the Canadian River, benefiting the Arkansas shiner and the Rio Grande Cutthroat trout. Thinning very dense tree stands will also improve the juniper and pinyon pine habitat for forest birds such as the pinyon jay.

Freaking eggheads!

UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER

Amphibians are undergoing a world-wide decline; certain species are becoming extinct. We know that die-offs of some species are associated with certain viral pathogens, but we do not know why their immune systems are not protecting them. If amphibian die-offs partially reflect natural or man-made environmental changes that are immunosuppressive, awareness of these environmental factors are necessary to re-establish ecological balance for the health of man and frogs, alike. This project uses the frog Xenopus as a laboratory model to continue to investigate the mechanisms of viral immunity at the molecular, cellular and whole organism level. The investigators will examine in detail the role of T cells in protecting the frog against subsequent infections. The importance of immune surveillance will also be evaluated in the whole organism by generating transgenic frogs and over-expressing important immune genes. Finally, the dual roles of immune cells of the peritoneal cavity in helping the host immune response as well as serving as permissive viral reservoir allowing covert infection will be investigated. This project will contribute to a better fundamental understanding of the evolution of viral immunity. It will provide the closest and most realistic assessment of the importance of host immunity as a susceptibility factor contributing in emerging viral diseases in general, and in the global decline of amphibians, in particular. This study may also provide practical methods to probe viral infection in wild population of amphibians. Understanding the causes of amphibian decline is of public interest, and may reveal pratical ways to protect endangered amphibian species from infectious agents. Finally, this project will offer opportunity for high school, undergraduate and graduate students, including underrepresented minorities, to study fundamental immunology in the context of viral diseases, and to learn modern molecular and cellular techniques.

$330,926 to look at rocks ... from AFRICA !

Jobs Reported 0.00

TEXAS A & M RESEARCH FOUNDATION

This project's objective is to identify the source of oxidized iron minerals in the 3.26-billion-year-old Manzimnyama Jaspillite Member of South Africa, one of the oldest well-preserved examples of a class of rocks called banded iron formations. Banded iron formations provide a record of iron oxidation occurring in the Earth?s oceans from >3.7- to 1.8-billion-years-ago. One of the first hypotheses explaining the origins of these rocks suggested that oxygen produced by photosynthetic bacteria growing in shallow water reacted with dissolved iron supplied from the deep ocean, producing oxidized iron minerals which settled to the sea floor. Banded iron formations were therefore thought to provide evidence for the very early evolution of oxygen-producing photosynthetic bacteria. However, later hypotheses have provided alternative explanations for early iron oxidation. In some circumstances, exposure to ultraviolet light can rapidly oxidize dissolved iron, so it is possible that some early banded iron formations may have been formed without the action of living organisms. It is now also known that some photosynthetic bacteria can oxidize iron directly without producing oxygen. Since non-oxygen-producing photosynthesis evolved before oxygen-producing photosynthesis, it is possible that early banded iron formations formed in this way. At present, there is no known way to determine which hypothesis is correct for any particular banded iron formation. Successfully testing these hypotheses will provide important new evidence about the evolution of photosynthesis and the early biosphere. Our approach exploits characteristics of two naturally occurring metals, manganese and cerium, both of which oxidize in the presence of oxygen. Critically, neither should be oxidized as rapidly as iron by ultraviolet light or at all by iron-oxidizing photosynthetic bacteria. Our predictions are that 1. banded iron formations formed in the presence of oxygen would contain oxidized manganese and cerium; 2. banded iron formations formed primarily from ultraviolet promoted iron oxidation would contain some oxidized manganese and cerium but much less than those formed in the presence of oxygen; 3. and that banded iron formations formed by iron-oxidizing (non-oxygen-producing) photosynthetic bacteria would not contain any oxidized manganese and cerium. We will test this hypothesis by conducting metal oxidation experiments with ultraviolet light, oxygen-producing photosynthetic bacteria, and iron-oxidizing photosynthetic bacteria to measure the relative oxidation rates of iron, manganese, and cerium under these three conditions. We will simultaneously test for variations in relative iron, manganese, and cerium sedimentation rates in the Manzimnyama Jaspillite Member and the 3.42-billion-year-old Buck Reef Chert, an iron-rich unit showing no evidence for iron oxidation. Geological results will be compared with experimental results to infer the major process responsible for iron oxidation during deposition of a 3.26-billion-year-old banded iron formation. Broader Impacts: All research will be conducted by a graduate student supervised by the PI and co-PI. In addition, experimental work will be aided by an undergraduate student, potentially for an undergraduate honors thesis. Results and specific experiments will be incorporated into a graduate level geobiology course taught by the PI and an undergraduate course in astrobiology and early life to be developed by the PI and co-PI. The undergraduate course will be organized so as to take advantage of long-distance learning web technology to serve undergraduates throughout the Texas A&M University System, including campuses with high populations of underrepresented minorities.

$270,972 to study seaweed and mud

Jobs Reported 0.00

MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

This award is funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Public Law 111-5). Microbial mats are conspicuous components of many benthic marine and aquatic settings. A subset of these microbial mats binds sediments to form potentially fossilizable structures, often called stromatolites or microbialites. While much is known about microbialite autotrophs, little is known about their heterotrophic eukaryotes. The lack of understanding is surprising given that stromatolites have an extensive geologic record spanning most of Earth's history. Stromatolites are layered sedimentary structures formed by a combination of microbial activities, abiotic carbonate precipitation, and sedimentary processes. Details of stromatolite formation and preservation are poorly understood, and a drastic decline in stromatolite occurrence and diversity in the late Precambrian has long been a conundrum. A popular hypothesis to explain this decline at ~1 billion years ago is that eukaryotic organisms evolved to become predators on stromatolites. To date, the most commonly proposed predatory culprit is an unidentified metazoan, although evidence of such an organism is lacking from the fossil record. Protists, most of which are not expected to leave an obvious fossil record, are additional possible stromatolitic predators, but they have been largely ignored in this context. The hypotheses of this project are: (1) Heterotrophic protist activity caused the textural change from stromatolites (layered sediment fabric) to thrombolites (clotted sediment fabric) and (2) Heterotrophic protists caused the decimation of Neoproterozoic stromatolites. Since it is impossible to recreate the Neoproterozoic, studies of modern analogs serve to indirectly test these hypotheses. The overall goal of this project is to describe the eukaryotic communities associated with modern stromatolites and thrombolites from the Bahamas and Australia, compare the communities from the two sites, and to relate the communities to stromatolitic / thrombolitic sediment fabric and biomarker signatures. The overall goal will be achieved by addressing the following specific aims: (1) Identify, via morphologic and molecular approaches, the eukaryotic community of modern stromatolites and thrombolites; (2) Analyze modern and fossil stromatolites and thrombolites for their eukaryotic lipid biomarkers using solvent extraction, chromatographic and mass spectrometric methods; (3) Using the Fluorescently Labeled Embedded Core (FLEC) method, document the sub-millimeter distributions of the heterotrophic eukaryotic community inhabiting modern stromatolites and thrombolites in conjunction with fine-scale sediment fabric; (4) Using solvent extraction, chromatographic and mass spectrometric methods, analyze cultures of allogromiid foraminifers to survey for lipid biomarkers unique to them; (5) After incubation of modern stromatolites with heterotrophic protists, use FLEC methodology to determine how their activity affects sediment fabric and conduct preliminary comparisons of these modern fabrics to those of stromatolite fossils. Intellectual Merit: The oldest fossil stromatolites are >3.4 billion years old and are the most visible manifestations of pervasive microbial life on the early Earth. The changes in stromatolite abundance and morphology document complex interplays between biological and geological processes. This project addresses multiple aspects of stromatolite genesis and pre-fossilization alteration but at its core, focuses on one of the greatest geological enigmas: the possible connection between stromatolite decline and the rise of complex life.
